It was with some trepidation that the Gardening Club took over the baton of organising the 33rd Cardinham Garden Show, but it was generally agreed that the show which took place in the Parish Hall, on September 5th, was a great success. As Ella said, it has been a more than usually challenging year for gardeners but exhibits were of very high quality and most classes were well supported. We were delighted to have a good range of entries in the fun and children's classes, with some really imaginative entries.

We are very grateful to the judges and stewards who were painstaking in their duties and we have learned a lot about showing, particularly of vegetables. Did you know for example that onion tops should be left at an inch long and tied with either white raffia or string not coloured, or that carrot tops should also be trimmed to an inch and the tops tied in a similar way? As someone commented, there is much more to this showing lark than meets the eye! However, do not be put off as one of the judges said this is a village show and we don't expect exhibits to be presented as per RHS guidelines!

The event made a profit of nearly £130 which will be donated to Perennial, the Gardeners' Benevolent Fund. Our thanks to all who took part, the Gardening Club Committee for all their hard work and to Ella and Edna for all their help and advice.

We aim to include one or two more classes next year, so if you didn't take part this year make the first Saturday in September next year a date in your diary. We look forward to seeing you all now the baton is firmly grasped!

Happy gardening,

Libby Pidcock
